Self-Direction as a Potential Influence on the Etiology of Schizophrenia2898-D East 51st Street, Tulsa, OK 74105. Genetic and environmental theories do not account for all the variance in the incidence of schizophrenia. In failing to consider the role of selfdirection, researchers may have excluded a critical area. Literature suggesting that schizophrenics demonstrate some control over their symptoms is reviewed. A variety of theorists are cited to support the view that selfdirection is a significantvariable. Continuingto exclude this variable from research potentially limits our knowledge. Including this variable in research implies revision of current research methods.
