Laing and Heidegger on AlienationPsychology, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA 15282; burston{at}duq3.cc.duq.edu R. D. Laing's concept of alienation-evidenced in his theory of "true" and "false" guilt, social fantasy systems, and artistic creativity-is discussed in light of the ideas of alienation and authenticity in Hegel, Marx, and Heidegger. Despite a tendency to polemical excess, there is much in Laing's approach that merits further exploration and discussion.
